Learn About Prediction Markets

Everything you need to understand how prediction markets work, why they matter, and how to start trading on USA2028. No prior experience required.

What Is a Prediction Market?

A prediction market is a type of financial market where participants trade contracts that pay out based on the outcome of real-world events. Instead of buying shares of a company, you buy shares in an outcome — for example, whether a particular candidate will win an election or whether a policy will be enacted by a specific date. The price of each share reflects the collective estimate of the probability of that outcome occurring.

Prediction markets have existed in various forms for centuries. Modern implementations like the Iowa Electronic Markets (founded in 1988) demonstrated that markets consistently produce more accurate forecasts than polls and expert opinions. USA2028 brings this concept to the 2028 American cycle with real-money trading, AI-powered analysis, and Swiss regulatory compliance.

How Do Prediction Markets Work?

On USA2028, every market poses a question with a YES/NO answer. Traders buy shares in the outcome they believe is correct. YES shares and NO shares always add up to $1.00 in price. When the event occurs and the market resolves, winning shares pay $1.00 each, and losing shares pay $0.00. Your profit is the difference between what you paid and what your shares are worth at resolution.

For example, if YES shares on a market are trading at $0.65, that means the market collectively estimates a 65% probability of that event happening. If you buy YES at $0.65 and the outcome is indeed YES, you earn $0.35 per share in profit (a 54% return). You can also sell your shares at any time before the market resolves, locking in profits or cutting losses as the probability changes.

Why Are Prediction Markets Accurate?

Prediction markets aggregate information from diverse participants who each bring different knowledge, perspectives, and analytical approaches. When real money is at stake, participants are incentivized to seek out accurate information and calibrate their beliefs carefully. Participants with better information or analysis earn profits, while those with poor models lose money — creating a natural selection mechanism for accuracy.

Academic research has consistently shown that prediction markets outperform polls, expert panels, and statistical models in forecasting election outcomes, economic events, and geopolitical developments. The market price incorporates not just public information but also the private knowledge and judgment of every participant, weighted by their willingness to put money behind their conviction.
