The Iran conflict has put Gulf states in an extraordinarily uncomfortable position — they host US bases being used to strike a neighbor, making them Iranian targets. Qatar (Al Udeid Air Base) and Bahrain (Fifth Fleet HQ) are most exposed. Gulf states have been diversifying their security relationships toward China and away from total US dependence. However, a formal base closure request would fundamentally alter the Gulf security architecture and leave them more vulnerable. More likely: quiet diplomatic pressure and restrictions on operations launched from their territory.
