NFL owners have long desired an 18-game season for the additional revenue (estimated $2B+ annually). The move to 17 games in 2021 was widely seen as a stepping stone. However, the NFLPA has strongly resisted further expansion due to player safety concerns, and the current CBA runs through 2030. Any expansion would likely require CBA renegotiation with significant player concessions. The economics strongly favor it, but labor dynamics make the timing uncertain.
