The US has historically resisted national ID systems due to deep-rooted privacy concerns across the political spectrum. While mobile drivers licenses and state-level digital IDs are expanding, a federal system faces enormous political, privacy, and technical obstacles. Neither party has championed a national digital ID, and the implementation timeline for such a complex system would extend well beyond 2029 even if authorized today.
