The $7.5B NEVI program has been notoriously slow to deploy chargers. As of early 2026, only a fraction of the planned stations are operational despite funding being allocated in 2022. Bureaucratic requirements, utility interconnection delays, permitting challenges, and the "Buy America" provisions have significantly slowed deployment. While the number of stations is increasing, completing the full national network by 2028 would require a dramatic acceleration from current pace.
